Steve Clarke has fostered a promising group of players and an attractive brand of football, as seen during Scotland's impressive 2-2 draw with the Netherlands two weeks ago.

Their glut of talent at left-back has become a running joke, but the lesser-heralded John McGinn, Stuart Armstrong and Che Adams should be looking to make their mark on this tournament.

Can they ride the feel-good factor like Wales did in 2016?

That tournament did not go to plan for the Czechs, who crashed out with just one point five years ago, but they shouldn't be underestimated. Jaroslav Šilhavý's men beat England in qualifying, and in Tomáš Souček and Patrik Schick they possess some serious aerial weaponry, with set-pieces a particular strength.

ROBBO'S RALLYING CRY

Andy Robertson wants Scotland to believe as they take on the Czech Republic.

The Liverpool star and Scotland captain said: "Since the manager came in he's always said we're a good squad but lacking a wee bit of belief.

"Being able to qualify for a tournament for the first time in 23 years gives you belief you can do it again and go and perform in the big tournaments.

"I'd like us to have more belief in ourselves, more confidence, in being able to show what we can do. Hopefully we can do that on the biggest stage. If we do, we're a right good team on our day.

"We're all so excited. It's been 23 long years waiting. We can feel the nation is excited for it and it's important we try to keep a smile on their faces.

"I'm sure we could have sold out Hampden plenty of times over for this game. There are 12,000 lucky enough to be in there but the whole nation will be watching, and we'll feel that support and that love. Hopefully we can do them proud.

"The fact a lot of kids, teenagers and people in their early 20s, have unfortunately never witnessed us in a major tournament, and the fact that's now going to happen, I hope it inspires the nation."

STRONG SELECTION

Steve Clarke has no injury worries in his 26-man squad, but says he has already decided on his starting XI to face the Czechs.

Midfielder John Fleck will not feature today, having missed several days' training after testing positive for Covid-19.

The Czechs have drafted in Tomas Koubek - who joins the squad on Tuesday - after fellow goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka was ruled out with a back injury.

They otherwise are at full strength, with Slavia Prague defender Ondrej Kudela omitted from the squad as he serves a 10-match ban for racially abusing Rangers' Glen Kamara in a Europa League tie.

Czech Republic head coach Jaroslav Silhavy said: "We’re quite nervous, but it's normal given what we’re facing, which is the peak of our careers with the national team.

"It will be a close game decided by details."

After 23 years ago, Scotland are back in the big time.

This will be the Tartan Army’s first appearance at a major tournament since losing 3-0 to Morocco in Saint-Étienne at the 1998 World Cup, 8,392 days ago.

Back in November, David Marshall’s big left hand denied Aleksandar Mitrović as Scotland defeated Serbia in the play-off final on penalties.

Now, at long last, the big day has arrived.

Although, Steve Clarke insists his side aren’t just going to make up the numbers and their recent results would suggest that this is the case.

The Dark Blues have only lost two of their last 14 competitive games and they were the both Nations League fixtures immediately after the win in Serbia.

Clarke also has a lot of talent at his disposal which has not been the case for recent Scotland managers.

John McGinn will be their main goal threat having, so far, bagged ten goals for his country, all coming in qualifiers since September 2019.

He’ll be looking to link with Lyndon Dykes and/or Ché Adams who could start a competitive match together up front for the very first time.

Roared on by a home crowd at Hampden, can Scotland win a European Championship match for only the third time?

Will the Czech Republic spoil the party?

The Czech Republic meanwhile have now qualified for all seven Euros since the breakup of Czechoslovakia.

In their very first, they reached the final of Euro ’96 and will be dreaming of returning to Wembley for the showpiece occasion 25 years on.

To get to this competition, Jaroslav Šilhavý’s side finished second in their qualifying group which was, in all honesty, one of the weaker.

England topped the group with the Czechs ousted Kosovo, Montenegro and Bulgaria to that all-important runners-up position.

In all, the Czech Republic’s form is solid.

Their UEFA Nations League record is played six, won ten and they were promoted to League A back in November.

In March, they began World Cup Qualifying by hammering Estonia 6-2, holding Belgium to a 1-1 draw before losing 1-0 in Cardiff to Wales.

Tomáš Souček scored a perfect hat-trick in the first of those matches and, as he has been for West Ham this season, will be a man to keep an eye on.

England and Croatia complete a competitive Group D in which all of the teams will believe they can advance to the round of 16.

Will either start with three points in Glasgow?

Prediction: Scotland 2-1 Czech Republic

These two countries met in the UFEA Nations League as recently as Autumn 2020.

In the first though, in Olomouc, the Czechs were forced to name a reserve XI due to a Covid-19 outbreak as Scotland ran out 2-1 winners.

A month later at Hampden, both teams had their full-strength teams on the field but Scotland won again, this time 1-0, Ryan Fraser the scorer.
